Avro Vulcan
Designed in 1947 by Roy Chadwick, A V Roe and Company's chief designer, the prototype Avro Type 698 first flew on August 30th 1952. Officially named the Vulcan in January 1953, this magnificent delta-winged bomber was designed to carry the UK's nuclear deterrent. In the end, the type was only ever used in anger once, in conventional bombing role during the Falklands conflict. XH558 returned to the air in 2008 as the sole flying example left in the world, although many others have been retired to museums in the UK and elsewhere.
