Avro Lancaster
Probably the most famous British bomber of World War II, the Avro type 683, Lancaster was designed by Roy Chadwick, A V Roe and Company's chief designer. Based on the company's twin engined Manchester, the prototype Lancaster first flew in January 1941 and the first squadron (no 44) took delivery on December 24th 1941 at Waddington. The Lancaster took part in many bombing operations during World War II but is perhaps most famous for the Dambuster raids carried out by 617 squadron in 1943. 7,373 Lancasters were built and only 2 now survive in airworthy condition, one in Britain and the other in Canada.
