Begun by William the Conqueror as a motte and bailey castle in 1070, to protect the Western approach to London, Windsor Castle has been developed and enhanced into one of the finest castles in Britain. Now one of the official residences of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, Windsor has been a royal residence and home to thirty-nine monarchs and is the oldest royal residence to have been in continuous use.
